Covering Exeter from Taunton
Our base is just outside Taunton, and Exeter is a straightforward run down the M5. It's well inside the roughly 50-mile area we cover across Somerset and Devon. We take on domestic and commercial work in the city, and every job starts the same way: a visit, an honest look and a free written quote.
Exeter's housing and its roofs
Exeter has a real mix of building ages, and the roof on each type tends to fail in its own way.
Victorian and Edwardian terraces
Streets in Heavitree, St Thomas, Mount Pleasant and around Pennsylvania are lined with older terraced and semi-detached houses, many with natural slate roofs, tall shared chimneys and rear outriggers with small slopes and valleys. Common issues are nail sickness causing slipped slates, worn lead at chimneys and back additions, and parapet or party-wall details that need careful work. Our slate roof repairs page explains those faults.
Post-war estates
Areas such as Exwick, Whipton and Beacon Heath include many mid-century homes with concrete interlocking tiles. Here the problems are often original felt that has perished, mortar ridges and verges that have cracked, and flat-roofed garages or porches that have reached the end of their life.
Newer builds on the edges
Developments around the outskirts, such as Alphington and the east of the city, have younger roofs, but dry verge units can come loose in wind and gutters can be undersized for heavy rain. Small faults here are usually quick to put right.
Topsham
Topsham's older riverside buildings bring character roofs, period details and exposure to weather off the estuary, where careful matching of materials matters.
Roof repairs in Exeter
Slipped tiles, cracked slates, loose ridges, failed valleys and storm damage make up most repair work. We trace leaks back to their actual source before fixing anything; read more on our roof repair page.
Re-roofs and flat roofs
Where repairs keep coming back, a full strip and re-roof with new membrane, battens and leadwork can be the better long-term choice, as described on our roof replacement page. For extensions, dormers and garages, see our flat roofs page for EPDM, GRP and felt.
Chimneys and guttering
Exeter's older housing has plenty of chimney stacks, many no longer in use, that need repointing, new flaunching or capping; see chimney repairs. Leafy streets mean gutters block easily, and old cast iron or early plastic systems often need repair or replacement; our guttering, fascias and soffits page covers cleaning, repairs and new roofline.
Nearby areas
Heading east, we also cover Honiton and the surrounding villages; see our page for roofers in Honiton. The full list of towns is on our areas we cover page.
