What to do before we arrive
- Switch off electrics to any room where water is near light fittings or sockets.
- Catch drips in buckets and lift rugs, furniture and electronics out of the way.
- If a ceiling is bulging, keep everyone out of that room.
- Take photos of the damage inside and, from the ground, outside.
- Stay off the roof and away from loose tiles or chimney debris below it.
Then call 07399 680142 and tell us what you can see. If the problem is a slow drip rather than an emergency, our roof leaking guide may help you work out the cause.
Two stages: make safe, then repair
An emergency roofer's first job is a temporary roof repair that keeps weather out. That might mean refixing or replacing blown tiles, sealing a lifted flashing, securing loose ridge tiles, or sheeting an opened section with a weighted and fixed roof tarpaulin. On a flat roof it might be a temporary patch over a split. The aim is a watertight roof and a safe property, not a finished job done in the dark and rain.
Once the weather allows, we return to carry out the proper repair, using matching tiles or slates, new mortar or lead where needed. Leaving a temporary fix in place is a false saving, so we don't treat it as the end of the job. The permanent repair is described on our roof repair page.
Storm damage roof problems we see
High winds across Somerset and Devon tend to cause the same handful of problems: tiles and slates lifted from the verge or ridge, ridge mortar that finally lets go, lead flashing peeled back from a chimney, and flat roof coverings torn at the edges. Heavy rain then exploits whatever gap the wind opened. On flat roofs, blocked outlets can turn a downpour into standing water that finds its way in; for those see our flat roof repair page.
Emergency roof leak repair cost
We can't price an emergency without knowing what's happened. The cost of emergency roof repair work depends on the height of the damage, the access, how much material has been lost and whether a single visit can finish the job. We'll tell you what we did, what's left and what the permanent repair involves, with that work quoted in writing.
Photos and your insurer
If you plan to claim, your insurer will usually want evidence. Photos taken before anything is moved are useful, and we can show you the damage we found while we're there.
