Crossing into east Devon

Our base is just outside Taunton, but the business has never stopped at the county line. We take on work up to about 50 miles away, and Honiton falls well within that, so we're happy to quote for anything from a handful of slipped tiles to a complete new roof.

Being a little further away doesn't change how we work. Jason still comes out in person, gets a proper look at the roof and gives you a written price before anything is booked in.

Older town houses and newer homes

Honiton's high street and the lanes around it are lined with older buildings, many of them listed or in a conservation area, while the edges of town have more modern housing. The two need quite different thinking.

On older properties, roofs often have natural slate or clay tiles, lime-based mortar and lead details that have been patched more than once over the years. The job there is to repair with materials that suit the building, and to check with the council if anything visible is changing. On newer homes, roofs are usually concrete tile with a modern membrane, and problems tend to centre on ridges, verges, valleys and any flat roof sections.

Pitched roof repairs and re-roofs

For a pitched roof, we deal with broken and slipped tiles, loose slates, cracked ridges, failing verges and storm damage. Where a roof has reached the end of its useful life, we strip it back and rebuild it with new membrane, battens, tiles or slates and leadwork. Our re-roofs page explains that process, and the roof repairs page covers smaller fixes.

Flat roofs on extensions and garages

A lot of east Devon homes have gained a kitchen extension, garage or dormer with a flat roof at some point. Those roofs work hard, and an old felt covering that has started to blister or split will eventually let water in. We replace them with EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass or felt, depending on the roof and what you want from it. Our flat roofs page compares the three.

Leadwork and chimneys

Lead is what seals the joints where a roof meets a chimney or a wall, and on older Honiton buildings it's often the first thing to fail. Lifted, cracked or poorly dressed flashings let water run behind them into the brickwork. We replace flashings and valleys, described on our lead roofing page.

Chimney stacks get the full treatment too: repointing, new flaunching, resetting pots, capping and rebuilding where needed. See chimney repairs for more.

Gutters and the roofline

Many roof problems start at the edges. A gutter that has dropped or blocked spills water down the wall, and a rotten fascia board gives the gutter nothing firm to hold on to. If your roofline is looking tired, it's worth having it checked at the same visit as the roof itself, so both can be priced together.

Frequently asked questions

Do you really cover Honiton from Taunton?

Yes. We work across Somerset and Devon up to about 50 miles from Taunton, and Honiton is comfortably inside that. It's a regular part of our patch, not a one-off.

Can you work on older properties in Honiton?

Yes. Older buildings need a careful eye and the right materials, from matching slates to a suitable mortar for the stack. We'll talk you through the approach when we visit.

Do you fit flat roofs in east Devon?

We do. We fit EPDM, GRP and felt flat roofs on extensions, garages and dormers, and we'll explain which suits your roof and budget after seeing it.

What should I send before you visit?

The address, what you've noticed and, if you can take them safely from the ground or a window, a few photos. That helps Jason arrive with a fair idea of the job.
