From the Tor to the Levels
Glastonbury sits between the Mendip area and the Somerset Levels, with Street nearby. Its setting includes low-lying ground and the more exposed slopes around the Tor. A sheltered terrace and a hillside cottage need not experience wind-driven rain in the same way. That difference matters when checking a leak which appears only during weather from a particular direction.
Describe the position of the affected slope when making an enquiry. A stain beside a chimney, damp at an upstairs window and dripping at an extension junction suggest different routes for water. Photographs taken safely from ground level help show the arrangement, but they cannot establish the condition of concealed battens or fixings.
A cottage roof is not a terrace roof
An older stone cottage may have irregular roof lines, reused materials and a chimney which has been altered over time. Before replacing coverings, identify the existing tile or slate, the spacing of the supporting battens and how the roof meets the masonry. A modern substitute is not automatically appropriate simply because its colour looks similar.
Victorian terraces introduce other considerations: adjoining roofs, shared access, party-wall junctions and rear additions. Explain which parts belong to your property and whether the work might affect a neighbour. Where a building is listed or within a conservation area, check consent requirements before changing its appearance; age alone does not establish its legal status.
Choose the scale of work from the evidence
A small area of missing covering does not prove that a whole roof is worn out. Localised roof repair can address a defined defect, while the pitched roof replacement page explains renewal where deterioration is widespread. Ask what evidence supports either approach and what will be inspected after stripping.
For rear kitchens, garages and dormers, flat roofing involves more than the top membrane. Falls, deck stiffness and junction heights affect how reliably water reaches the outlet. An estimate should distinguish replacing a covering from rebuilding a damaged deck or changing the drainage arrangement.
Check the water route beyond the roof slope
Wet stonework below a stack may call for chimney repairs, but gutter overflow can produce a similar stain lower down. Look for the timing and position of wet patches rather than assuming every damp wall has the same cause. Guttering, fascias and soffits form the final part of the rainwater route and deserve attention alongside the covering.
When water is entering now, use the emergency roof repairs information and keep clear of loose masonry. If a survey has identified foam in the loft, discuss spray foam removal separately, with the survey wording and any lender requests available. Removal is not a promise of a particular mortgage decision.
Arrange a roof enquiry for the right building
Give JBHomecare the Glastonbury address, the building type and a short account of the problem through the quote enquiry page. Mention access restrictions, conservation concerns and any previous repair documents you hold. Those details help define the proposed visit without presenting a guess as a diagnosis. You can also compare neighbouring locations on the Somerset and Devon areas hub.
