What to do when weather has disturbed the roof
If a storm leaves something loose or water starts coming indoors, keep people away from the affected area and tell us what has happened. Do not climb onto the roof, even on a low bungalow. Catch drips where it is safe, move belongings and stay clear of wet electrical fittings. Photographs from a sheltered ground-level position can show damage without putting you at risk.
JBHomecare offers emergency roof repairs and leak call-outs. Explain whether water is still entering and whether any roof material appears unstable when you make contact. The weather and the condition of the building affect what work can safely be undertaken; an enquiry does not require you to identify the exact cause first.
Salt, wind and the details at the perimeter
Seaton stands at the mouth of the River Axe on the Jurassic Coast, close to Beer, Colyford and the estuary wetlands. Wind-driven rain can approach roof junctions from the side, while salt air encourages corrosion of exposed metal fittings. A covering that sheds ordinary rain may still have a weakness at an edge, fixing or flashing in more exposed conditions.
Ridge and verge details deserve attention where mortar has opened or components have moved. Our dry ridge and dry verge page explains those systems, but changing the system is not automatically necessary for every loose ridge. Roof repairs can address damaged tiles, slates and failed joints after the surrounding construction has been checked.
Different buildings along the coast
Seafront Victorian and Edwardian villas have a different roof shape and access from bungalows or newer housing. Flats may share a covering, while a holiday let can have an extension or garage that needs assessing separately. These property types occur around Seaton, but the right scope of work comes from looking at the individual building, not assuming a job from its style.
Period roofs can have several slopes, stacks and wall junctions. Water may enter through weathered lead beside a chimney, or through mortar higher on the stack. Our chimney repair service covers the masonry and associated details. Describe the position of damp in relation to the chimney breast, since rain can travel before showing on a ceiling.
Flat roofs in exposed positions
A garage or extension roof needs a dependable route for runoff as well as a sound covering. Wind can drive rain against upstands and edge trims; standing water can reveal poor drainage or an obstructed outlet. We work with EPDM, GRP and felt flat roofs, considering the deck and the junction with adjoining walls when discussing repair or renewal.
Do not walk on a flat roof to clear an outlet or test a soft area. Its condition and ability to carry weight may not be apparent from above. Tell Jason about ponding you can see from a window, blistering or water appearing at an extension ceiling, and leave the closer examination to the visit.

Give rain a clear exit at the eaves
Exposed gutters need checking for alignment, sound joints and secure brackets. Corroded fittings or loose sections can allow movement, while leaves and debris restrict flow. Our guttering and roofline work considers fascias and soffits as well as the rainwater goods. A replacement should address the support and drainage route, not simply the appearance of the gutter.
Discuss the property and arrange a written quote
Jason Birch runs JBHomecare from outside Taunton, covering Somerset and Devon within about 50 miles. For a Seaton enquiry, send the address and roof details through the contact page. Mention shared access, an occupied flat or a lower roof beneath the work area so these practical points can be considered at the building.
Our Axminster town page looks at roofs further inland, and Honiton is also within the wider coverage area. Domestic and commercial roofing enquiries lead to a look at the proposed work and a free written quote, with no need to decide on a replacement before the fault has been assessed.
