Follow the rain, not just the stain
Axminster occupies the River Axe valley near the Somerset and Dorset borders. Wet weather and exposed valley sides can test roof junctions and gutters. Moss growth, blocked outlets and leaks beside a stack are faults worth checking, but a patch of damp alone cannot tell you which is responsible. Water may run along timber or under a covering before reaching the room below.
When looking for a roofer in Axminster, describe whether the problem appears during steady rain, in a particular wind direction or after a gutter overflows. JBHomecare is run by Jason Birch, based outside Taunton and covering Somerset and Devon within about 50 miles. Domestic houses and commercial buildings can be discussed through the same enquiry process.
A market-town centre with several kinds of roof
The historic streets around St Mary's church and Trinity Square differ from Victorian terraces and the later housing around Millwey Rise. The A35 and A358 and the Exeter–Waterloo railway connect the town, but it is the building's layout that determines access for roofing work. Narrow passages, attached neighbours and lower additions can all affect how a roof is reached.
On a terrace, a broken tile may be straightforward to identify, while a leak beside a party wall needs closer attention to the junction. Larger post-war and newer homes may combine pitched slopes with a garage or extension. Avoid assuming every wet ceiling means the same repair: the materials, the drainage route and the condition underneath need considering together.
Clear drainage and damaged coverings are separate questions
Leaves and moss can collect in gutters and valleys, causing water to back up or spill down masonry. Our roof moss removal and cleaning page explains the considerations around the covering. Cleaning should not be treated as a substitute for replacing a cracked tile or addressing failed flashing.
Where the fault is in tiles, slates, ridges or verges, see roof repairs. For overflowing joints and deteriorated roofline components, guttering, fascias and soffits is the relevant service. Tell us about visible drips outside as well as stains inside; the two observations may reveal different problems rather than one continuous leak.

Keeping the stack and the main roof in context
A chimney interrupts the path rain takes down a slope. Weathered mortar, cracks around the top and a failed flashing can each let moisture reach the building. Chimney repair work considers the stack itself alongside its junction with the roof. Repointing the brickwork alone is not necessarily the answer to a fault in that junction.
If the covering is worn across a larger area, a re-roof may be worth considering instead of successive small patches. The proposal can address membrane, battens, tiles or slates and leadwork together. Ask which parts are being retained and which are being renewed, particularly where an older main roof meets a later extension.
Lower roofs need their own drainage route
Garages, dormers and extensions are not simply smaller versions of the house roof. On a flat covering, an obstructed outlet, a weak edge or a wall junction can concentrate water in one place. JBHomecare provides EPDM, GRP and felt flat roof work. Choosing a covering requires a look at the deck and the way water leaves the surface, rather than choosing by appearance alone.
Enquiries from the town and surrounding villages
Include Kilmington, Chardstock, Musbury or Hawkchurch in your address if that is where the property stands. Use the enquiry page to explain the affected roof, any access difficulties and when the problem occurs. A photograph taken safely from the ground helps locate it without asking you to climb.
For the coast, our Seaton page considers exposed roofs; further west, see Honiton roofing. The Areas listing sets out the wider coverage. Jason can look at the building and provide a free written quote with the proposed work described clearly.
