Crossing into east Devon
Our base is just outside Taunton, but the business has never stopped at the county line. We take on work up to about 50 miles away, and Honiton falls well within that, so we're happy to quote for anything from a handful of slipped tiles to a complete new roof.
Being a little further away doesn't change how we work. Jason still comes out in person, gets a proper look at the roof and gives you a written price before anything is booked in.
A Georgian High Street, not a generic historic centre
Honiton is an East Devon market town near the River Otter, north-east of Exeter. Its Georgian High Street, home to the Hot Pennies ceremony, forms the core of Honiton Conservation Area. St Michael’s Church stands on the hill. Listed buildings in and around the town make it important to check the individual property rather than assume protection from its age alone.
East Devon District Council is the local planning authority, within Devon County Council’s area. Before changing a visible covering, ridge or chimney detail, establish the materials and consent requirements. Traditional roof repairs need suitable slate or other existing coverings, compatible mortar and careful lead junctions. That does not establish a specialist service or permission for a particular job without discussion.
Pitched roof repairs and re-roofs
For a pitched roof, we deal with broken and slipped tiles, loose slates, cracked ridges, failing verges and storm damage. Where a roof has reached the end of its useful life, we strip it back and rebuild it with new membrane, battens, tiles or slates and leadwork. Our re-roofs page explains that process, and the roof repairs page covers smaller fixes.

Flat roofs on extensions and garages
Where an extension, garage or dormer has a flat roof, its deck and drainage need assessment. An old felt covering that has started to blister or split will eventually let water in. We replace them with EPDM rubber, GRP fibreglass or felt, depending on the roof and what you want from it. Our flat roofs page compares the three.
Leadwork and chimneys
Lead seals the joints where a roof meets a chimney or a wall. Its condition should be assessed alongside the covering, not presumed from the age of a Honiton building. Lifted, cracked or poorly dressed flashings let water run behind them into the brickwork. We replace flashings and valleys, described on our lead roofing page.
Chimney stacks get the full treatment too: repointing, new flaunching, resetting pots, capping and rebuilding where needed. See chimney repairs for more.
Gutters and the roofline
Many roof problems start at the edges. A gutter that has dropped or blocked spills water down the wall, and a rotten fascia board gives the gutter nothing firm to hold on to. If your roofline is looking tired, it's worth having it checked at the same visit as the roof itself, so both can be priced together.
Roof repairs Honiton: finding the right scope
The River Otter corridor includes Flood Zone 2 areas and some Zone 3 land. This river setting is not evidence of a roof defect: distinguish ground-level flooding from rain entering at a valley or stack. Across East Devon, Census 2021 recorded 38.5% detached accommodation and 46.8% outright home ownership. Those figures apply to the authority, not Honiton itself; describe your roof and outbuildings individually.
For roof repairs in Honiton, identify whether the problem follows a roof junction, a ridge or a small area of missing covering. A stain after sustained rain can have a different route from wind-driven water beside a chimney. Send safe photographs and the timing of the leak. Where material is loose or water is entering now, the emergency roof repairs page provides the relevant next step.
Chimney repairs Honiton: separate the causes
Honiton’s major fires in 1747, 1765 and 1911 are part of the town’s history, not a diagnosis of today’s stacks. Chimney repairs should distinguish failing mortar from defective flashing, damaged top weathering and possible internal moisture problems. A chimney breast stain does not identify the remedy on its own. Ask which observations support the proposed work and whether the roof connection will be inspected as well as the stack.
At older town-centre properties, check listed status and conservation restrictions before altering visible details. Roof drainage also deserves attention: guttering, fascias and soffits can affect the wall below a sound covering. If a survey raises a separate loft concern, send its wording with a spray foam removal enquiry rather than treating it as part of an assumed chimney fault.
Booking a visit

For another Somerset location, we also have a page for roofers in Chard. The rest of our patch is listed on areas we cover.
Flat roof systems in east Devon
We fit EPDM, GRP and felt flat roofs on extensions, garages and dormers, and explain which suits the roof and budget after seeing it.
Useful information before a visit
Send the address, what you have noticed and, if you can take them safely from the ground or a window, a few photos. That helps Jason arrive with a fair idea of the job.
