Start with the part of the building that is giving trouble
Water on an upstairs ceiling, a loose ridge or a dripping garage roof are useful starting points when you get in touch. Describe what you can see without climbing onto the building. Jason Birch runs JBHomecare from just outside Taunton, around 12 miles from Ilminster, and can discuss repairs, replacement coverings and roofline work for domestic or commercial properties.
Ilminster sits by the A303 and A358, a few miles north of Chard. Its compact market-town centre includes the Minster and the Market Square, with honey-coloured Ham stone buildings nearby. Older stone cottages and period houses sit alongside post-war homes and newer estates towards the edges. That mix makes the construction of the individual roof more important than the postcode alone.
Clay tiles, slate and the junctions on older houses
On a stone cottage, an isolated slipped slate can leave a small opening with a surprisingly large effect indoors. Clay tiles may crack or move, while mortar along ridges can loosen. Our roof repair service covers tiles, slates and ridge or verge repointing. The aim is to identify the failed part and check the covering around it, not assume an older house needs a complete new roof.
Look at where slopes meet and where the roof joins masonry. Valleys collect runoff from both sides; leaves or fragments of mortar can obstruct that route. A damp chimney breast may point towards the stack rather than the main covering. Chimney repairs and repointing deal with deteriorated joints, while leadwork addresses flashings and other weatherproof junctions. These are related jobs, but one does not automatically solve the other.

When the roof needs more than individual repairs
Repeated faults across several slopes deserve a wider assessment. The visible tiles or slates are only the outer layer: membrane, battens and the supporting structure also influence what can sensibly be retained. A repair quote and a replacement proposal should explain different scopes, so you can understand why one is being recommended.
For a pitched roof replacement, the work includes stripping the old covering and fitting membrane, battens, tiles or slates and leadwork. On attached houses, neighbouring roof lines and shared junctions need considering as well. Mention any alterations or previous leaks when discussing the roof; they help build a clearer picture without relying on its age alone.
Extensions, garages and water leaving the roof
Post-war and newer homes often have lower additions that behave differently from the main pitched roof. An extension or garage may have failing edges, a wall junction or an outlet that holds water back. JBHomecare works on flat roofs in EPDM, GRP and felt. The existing deck, drainage and connection to the house all matter when choosing between a local repair and renewal.
A sound covering can still leave walls wet if gutters overflow. Ground-level staining, dripping joints and water overshooting a gutter are worth mentioning separately from an indoor leak. Our guttering, fascias and soffits service covers the roofline, allowing the proposal to consider where rain should go after it reaches the eaves.
Arrange a look in town or a nearby village
Send the address, the type of building and a brief account of the problem through the contact page. Ground-level photographs can help show the affected slope or stack. Let Jason know about restricted side access or a garage behind the house so these can be considered when looking at the job.
Horton, Ashill, Donyatt, Whitelackington and Dowlish Wake are useful location details to include with your enquiry. See the coverage page for the wider area, or our neighbouring Chard roofing page if your property is further south. The next step is a look at what is needed and a free written quote, rather than a guess based on a town name.
