Why we don't publish a price per metre
Online figures for guttering cost usually assume a simple two-storey house with straight runs, sound fascias and easy access. Few houses match that exactly. The real price depends on what's on your building and what's found when the old gutters come down. A visit lets us measure properly and check the boards behind, so the written quote reflects your house rather than an average.
How much guttering is involved
The total length of gutter is the starting point, but it's not just metres. Each corner, stop end and outlet adds parts and fitting time, and every downpipe adds pipe, brackets and connection to the drain. A plain rectangle with two downpipes is far simpler than an L-shaped house with bays, a porch and a garage that all have their own runs.
Material and system
- UPVC: the most common and generally the most economical, in several profiles and colours.
- Aluminium: a more rigid, powder-coated system that typically costs more in materials.
- Seamless aluminium: formed on site, which involves specialist equipment.
- Cast iron: heavy and labour-intensive, usually chosen to suit period or listed buildings.
Deeper, high-capacity profiles cost more than standard ones, but may be needed on large or steep roofs.
Height and access
Guttering installation cost rises with height. A bungalow can be done from steps or a short ladder, while a three-storey house may need a tower or scaffold. Conservatories, extensions or narrow passages under the gutter also slow things down and may need extra protection or access equipment.
The fascias behind
This is the most common surprise. If the timber fascia is rotten, new gutters can't be fixed to it securely. Replacing the fascia, and often the soffit beneath, adds to the job but also solves the underlying problem. Our fascia and soffit replacement page explains what that involves. A good quote will say how fascia condition is handled.
Removing the old system
Plastic gutters come down quickly. Cast iron is heavy and can be rusted onto its brackets, which takes longer and needs careful handling, especially above a conservatory or path. Clearing and taking away the old material is part of the work.
Downpipes and drains
If downpipes connect into old clay gullies or soakaways, the joint at ground level may need attention. Moving a downpipe to a better position for flow can also add work. We'll mention it if your drainage at ground level looks like it needs looking at.
What changes gutter repair costs
For a repair, the main factors are what's failed (a seal, a bracket, a cracked length), how high it is, how many places need attention and whether matching parts are available for older profiles. Our gutter repair page covers the common fixes.
